Mouthguards

Now that the school year is in full swing, please remember that if you are participating in a sport it is very important to wear a mouthguard to prevent mouth and jaw injuries. If you are currently a patient and have braces give us a call and we will make you a mouthguard or give you one to make yourself at home. When you get your braces off, Dr. Hutta will make you a custom mouthguard to protect your new smile.

Mouth guards should be worn while participating in any sport of activity where the mouth might come into contact with a hard object or the ground. Mouth guards can help prevent injuries to the jaws, mouth, teeth, and possibly even the neck and central nervous system. This is why Dr. Hutta provides mouth guards for his patients at no cost.

Don't drink and brush!

There's one time when you shouldn't clean your teeth--right after you drink a soda or other acidic beverage. Acid in the drink, along with the abrasive action of brushing, can erode your tooth enamel. So instead, sip water or chew gum to activate the saliva, then brush your teeth! Who would have known?

Dental Health Month

February is National Dental Health Month, and Dr. Hutta and Team would like to give you some important tips for good oral hygiene, especially while in braces.

--Always brush for 2 minutes using short, gentle strokes, paying extra attention to the gumline and hard-to-reach areas such as the back teeth. Make sure you brush at least in the morning and bedtime, and after meals when possible.
--Remember to floss! Make sure to get beneath the gumline and curve the floss around the base of each tooth.
--Choose healthy snacks such as cheese, fruits and vegetables. Avoid sticky, chewy candies that can stick to your teeth. If you do eat these snacks, be sure to brush after eating them!
--Carbonated and sugary drinks create acids that can damage the teeth when mixed with saliva so they should be avoided. If you're going to drink one of these beverages don't sip on it throughout the day; drink it and then brush your teeth.
--In addition to seeing Dr. Hutta for your regular appointments, visit your general dentist for professional check-ups and cleaning every six months.

Practice these tips and you will be on you way to a healthy beautiful smile!

Ortho Essentials Program

Start treatment this summer and become part of our new Ortho Essentials program! We know that good oral hygiene is more challenging during orthodontic treatment. That's why Dr. Hutta feels very strongly about being the only orthodontist in the Columbus area to offer the new Ortho Essentials program for our patients. The Ortho Essentials program is a 3-step oral hygiene program designed to boost oral health and hygiene practices in orthodontic patients. The day our patients get their braces on we will go over the importance of proper hygiene techniques. In order to help with proper hygiene our patients will receive a free Ortho Essentials kit which includes a Oral-B Triumph power toothbrush, Crest toothpaste, and rinse. At each visit we will rate your brushing to make sure you are maintaining proper oral hygiene. The purpose of this program is to work with you and your general dentist to give you a healthy, beautiful smile!

AAO Scholarship Contest

The AAO is having a "How Orthodontics Changed My Life" video contest where two winners will each be awarded a $2,500 scholarship. Postmark deadline for entering is July 15, 2010. Funds may be used toward the winners' post-high school educational expenses at a college, university, vocational or technical school. Tell your story on video, answering questions such as: What were you like before you had orthodontic treatment? How have you changed?·How proud are you of your new smile? ·When did you notice changes in yourself? What kinds of changes have you noticed?·What does your new smile mean to you? ·What would you say to others whose smiles make them self-conscious? The "How Orthodontics Changed My Life" video contest is open to students who are legal residents of the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and Canada, who are 18 years of age or younger as of July 15, 2010 and who have had, or are having, orthodontic treatment by a member of the AAO. The contestant should be in the active retention phase of treatment or have completed active retention. Contest guidelines provide instructions to contestants on submitting their videos.Videos are to be submitted on DVDs or USB flash drives, which should mailed to: LindaGladden, Director of Communications or Marketing , American Association of Orthodontists, 401 N. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63141. All video entries must be submitted by July 15, 2010. Each entrant must include a signed release form (see the contest guidelines) with his or her video. Videos submitted should be two minutes in length or less. Entries are limited to one per person. There is no fee to enter. The 10 finalists and two scholarship winners will be selected by AAO communications staff and a team of AAO members serving on the Association's Council on Communications.By August 15, 2010, the 10 finalist videos will be posted at the AAO Web site, Braces.org, and on the specialty Web site, AAOinfo.org. Halloween is here and it more important than ever to maintain good oral hygiene. All those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats can damage your teeth and braces, too! Did you know that sour candies can be acidic to your teeth and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities. Besides cavities and tooth decay, many people do not realize that good oral health and hygiene are important to your overall health, too. Research is discovering the connection between periodontal disease and other major health concerns, such as heart disease! So it is very important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine!
